Who Invented The Zamboni? The Story of Frank Zamboni's "Model A Zamboni Ice Resurfacer"
Living in Southern California, Frank Zamboni along with brothers Frank and Lawrence used their farming mechanical skills in 1940 to develop a machine to resurface the ice at the family built outdoor Iceland Skating Rink in Paramount, California.
The first prototype had water tanks that sat on surplus Jeep body. Within a few years, Frank decided to develop a new design adding 4-wheel drive and adjustable blade to scrape the ice to his base design.
In 1949 his "Model A Zamboni Ice Resurfacer" became a working reality followed by Patent Application #93,478 became the term for all resurfacers even if they are not a Zamboni brand.
Recently, in October 2024, Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo Koehn, Medford Recreation, Medford Youth Hockey and the LoConte Rink, Medford welcomed their brand new "Electric" (Battery Operated) Zamboni.
